Scalp examination and diagnosis

Hair care is just as important as skincare

Thinning hair or hair loss (alopecia), scalp diseases, and seborrheic dermatitis are some of the most prominent aesthetic defects today, which require the help of a trichologist, who deals with the diagnosis and treatment of the mentioned problems from a medical and cosmetic point of view.

Trichology is a special branch of dermatology that deals with the study of hair structure and diseases. Hair loss or alopecia can affect only the scalp or the whole body, and it can be temporary or permanent. We have approximately 100,000 hairs in the scalp area, and between 50 and 100 hairs fall out every day and are usually replaced by new hair, but this is not always the case.

After establishing the diagnosis, our specialist in dermatovenerology, Dr. Mikela Petković, will suggest a treatment that is suitable for your scalp condition. Petković Polyclinic also offers special scalp treatments.

Alopecia can develop gradually or suddenly, and other than the scalp, it can also affect the eyebrow, eyelash and chin area, or other parts of the body. The most common cause of hair loss is aging, and its severity depends on genetic predisposition. Other causes of hair loss can be traced to systemic diseases, hormonal changes, taking certain medication, stress, diet, or it can be idiopathic.

The success of the treatment of alopecia firstly depends on whether the hair loss is permanent, and whether it leaves scars and thus permanently destroys the hair follicles. A trichological examination includes taking a detailed personal and family history, an examination of the scalp and the rest of the body, a trichoscopic examination, and, if necessary, further diagnostic procedures before formulating a diagnosis.
